The Avenue of Art is a free self-guided walking tour open 24/7 of curated hand-painted sidewalks in downtown Sarasota. The artwork celebrates Sarasota County Centennial. With Crossroads: Deconstructing Boundaries in American Art, Ringling College hopes to examine the ways in which art can be used as a tool to dismantle these divisions.  Along with recurring student, staff and glass exhibitions, this year’s exhibition series features artists from diverse walks of life who have used their art to explore the intersections of their lived experiences. As they reveal the complexities in their identities, they also reach out to the viewer with a friendly outstretched hand, inviting them to revel in the universality of the human experience. We encourage our community to embrace that outstretched hand and help reconfigure the way we relate to each other. Title:  “People Everywhere” Drawings by Janet Flickinger  Janet loves the emphasis on common life as it occurs within the context of architecture. She loves to capture the interactions of people as they conduct their everyday pursuits of life. Her style can be characterized as social or photorealism with a highly technical and detailed structure her works are done primarily in pencil. The result is work that combines the fluidness of the human figure with the structure of architecture. As one examines her work they will begin to observe life through the perspective of her eyes. Janet is more drawn to capturing people rather than creating decorative art.

WBTT’s One-Act PlaysWestcoast Black Theatre Troupe will close its 2021-2022 season with two world-premiere one-act plays, under the auspices of its New Playwrights Series. These plays, “From Birmingham To Broadway” and “Float Like A Butterfly,” will be presented together May 4-29. “From Birmingham to Broadway” was written by and stars popular WBTT artist Tarra Conner jones. A tour-de-force tribute to Broadway singer and TV actress Nell Carter, the play portrays Carter’s determination to excel in entertainment despite her non-traditional appearance. Through a powerful combination of music, comedy and drama, Conner jones embodies the never-give-up spirit of this shining star of stage and screen. Director is WBTT Founder/Artistic Director Nate Jacobs. “Float Like a Butterfly” was written by Jacobs and his brother, Michael Jacobs, and will feature musical compositions by Derric Gobourne Jr. and Henry Washington. Darius Autry becomes the greatest-of-all-time heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali in this homage to a man who took a stand against the Vietnam war and injustice in America. Ali continues to inspire activist athletes to speak up for their beliefs. He was much more than a boxer: he was and remains an icon who showed the world he could “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” – far beyond the boxing ring. Director is Nate Jacobs. These plays will be presented together from May 4-29, 2022. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays and 2 p.m. for Saturday and Sunday matinees. “Worlds: A Part” with Hermitage Fellows Pauchi Sasaki and Monica Youn, Thursday, May 26 @ 6pm: Internationally renowned composer and performer Pauchi Sasaki and acclaimed poet Monica Youn, seem worlds apart. Winner of the Poetry Society of America’s William Carlos Williams Award, Youn’s poems are sharply crafted and weave together historical allusions and cultural references as diverse as Piero della Francesca, Goya, Martha Graham, and Twinkies. Both artists are grounded in their intersectional identities and multifaceted pursuits. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founding member Jimmie Fadden always admired early blues music.  It made him want to kick back, sing, and play his harmonica.  He formed Suitcase Full of Blues with bluesman Al Fuller and bassist JP Coley to do just that. Al Fuller has played all over the world, from Vietnam for the troops to Seattle, Maine to Florida. Now he makes his home in Sarasota, where he has hosted a blues jam for over 18 years. Longtime local bassist J.P. Coley has played bass for local favorites such as as the Hurricanes, Twinkle, the Instigators, Greg Poulos, Dan Electro, Tomcat Blake and the Venturas. Thirty-three albums, three number-one singles, and a couple of Grammys have not made drummer,vocalist, harmonica player Jimmie Fadden complacent. “I’ve been very lucky,” Fadden says.

What happens when you take some of your favorite improv games…and remove all the rules? Anything goes at Comedy Freestyle, an off-the-wall improvisation potpourri. Featuring a mashup of both short-form and long-form styles, audiences get the best of the art form when styles and techniques collide! We’ll set our performers free from all of the traditional dos and don’ts of improv, and you get to watch them figure out what comes next, completely on the spot.
